What is a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine?

September 1st, 2008 by admin

A vertical axis wind turbine is a turbine with the main axis arranged vertically. This arrangement allows the turbine to catch the wind no matter which direction it is blowing from. This type of turbine is best for areas where the wind direction is variable, as it can use wind coming from any direction.

Vertical axis wind turbines are built with the base, generator, and gearbox near the ground. They are tall and thin, and this design means that they don’t have to support any extra weight. Many turbines are installed on rooftops. This allows the building to redirect wind.

Vertical axis wind turbines mounted on roofs produce an optimum amount of energy. The building redirects the wind up and over the roof, doubling the speed at which it hits the turbine. This allows the turbine to produce much more energy - sometimes up to 50% greater than a turbine installed on the ground.
